‘Unalloyed enthusiasm’

“Coventry has this rough wood panel-clad space offering a very good time to anyone up for the joys of cooking their own lunch.”

How to eat Korean BBQ

You do the cooking, and that is the point. Nobody minds if you have never done it. The staff light the grill, keep an eye on it, and will show you the rest.

Comic, step 1, headed “1. Beware of the hot charcoal!” A hand reaching for the grill is crossed out with a red X, above a grill of meat on glowing charcoal with a dipping sauce and lettuce beside it. The panel reads: “Each BBQ table will get: one portion of mixed leaves, kimchi & edamame. We’ll set up the grill in the middle of the table and put egg, sweetcorn with cheese on to the pan.”

Comic: what arrives with the grill, drawn on the table: a plate of sweetcorn, a tray of three small side dishes and a wedge of cheese, with the cartoon chef waving.
Comic: the chef points at a sign showing raw meat turning into cooked meat. The sign reads: “Remember to cook meat or seafood thoroughly!”

Comic, step 2, headed “2. Let’s BBQ”. The panel reads: “Put your preferred meat, seafood or veg onto the grill and wait…” The cartoon chef drools beside a clock while pork belly, steak, a scallop and mushrooms smoke on the charcoal grill.
2. Let’s BBQ. Put your preferred meat, seafood or veg onto the grill and wait…
Comic, step 3: chopsticks lift a lettuce wrap of grilled meat and kimchi above a plate, with three dipping sauces beside it, under the word “Enjoy!”. It is headed “3. Let’s eat: meokja” and reads: “Dip the BBQ into the sauces then add some kimchi and wrap it with a crispy lettuce. Munch away!”

Tables need a few minutes to set up for barbecue, so booking ahead is worth it, especially at the weekend. Choose a BBQ table if you’re here for the grill, or a regular one if you’re coming for the kitchen.

Lost? Don’t be.

Priory Place is the little courtyard just off Fairfax Street, right by the cathedral. Look for Unit 5 (and follow the smell of charcoal).
